Medical Uses

Amphotericin B Liposomal (liposomal amphotericin B) is a potent antifungal medicine used in hospitals for severe, life-threatening fungal infections. It is prescribed for:

  • Invasive fungal infections such as aspergillosis, mucormycosis, and cryptococcosis

  • Cryptococcal meningitis, especially in HIV-infected individuals

  • Visceral leishmaniasis (kala-azar)

  • Systemic candidiasis and other deep fungal infections

The liposomal formulation improves delivery to infected tissues and reduces toxicity compared to conventional amphotericin B.

Dosage (General Medical Information Only)

Exact dose is determined by a specialist based on infection type, severity, and patient condition.

Typical dosing ranges:

  • 3–5 mg/kg/day for most fungal infections

  • 5 mg/kg/day or higher for mucormycosis

  • Single-dose or multi-dose regimens for visceral leishmaniasis

Administered intravenously once daily.

Possible Side Effects

Common side effects may include:

  • Fever or chills during infusion

  • Headache

  • Low potassium or magnesium levels

  • Kidney function changes

  • Nausea or vomiting

  • Anemia

Serious reactions can occur and require close medical monitoring.

How to Use

  • Administered only by trained healthcare professionals as an IV infusion.

  • Must be diluted properly and infused slowly to reduce infusion-related reactions.

  • Frequent monitoring of kidney function, electrolytes, and blood counts is required.

  • Hydration before and during treatment may be recommended by medical staff.
