Heparin (5000 IU) is an anticoagulant used in hospitals to prevent or manage blood clot–related conditions. Common medical uses include:
Prevention of deep vein thrombosis (DVT)
Prevention of pulmonary embolism (PE)
Prevention of clots in bedridden or post-surgery patients
To maintain patency of IV lines (low doses)
As part of treatment protocol for certain heart conditions, such as unstable angina or myocardial infarction
During dialysis, cardiac procedures, and certain surgeries to prevent clot formation
(Exact dose is always decided by a healthcare professional)
Prophylactic dose (to prevent clots):
5000 IU injected subcutaneously every 8–12 hours
Treatment dose (for confirmed clots):
Higher doses via IV infusion, adjusted based on coagulation tests (aPTT)
Heparin for IV line patency:
Much smaller doses, as per institutional protocol
Common or medically recognized side effects include:
Bleeding (nosebleeds, gum bleeding, prolonged bleeding from cuts)
Bruising at injection site
Pain, redness, or swelling at injection site
Low platelet count (Heparin-Induced Thrombocytopenia – HIT)
Elevated liver enzymes
Osteoporosis with long-term use
Serious side effects are rare but require immediate medical attention.
Usually administered subcutaneously into the abdomen by a healthcare professional.
Rotate injection sites to avoid irritation.
Do not mix with other injectable medicines in the same syringe.
Use exactly as prescribed based on coagulation monitoring.
