Etomidate is a short-acting intravenous anesthetic used mainly for:
Induction of general anesthesia before surgery
Rapid Sequence Intubation (RSI) in emergency settings
Short procedures requiring deep sedation
Patients with unstable blood pressure, as it has minimal cardiovascular effects
Dose always depends on patient weight, age, and condition. Must be given by trained medical professionals.
0.2–0.6 mg/kg IV
Injected slowly over 30–60 seconds
Usually 0.3 mg/kg IV
Onset: 30–60 seconds
Duration: 3–5 minutes
Note: Not used for continuous infusion due to risk of adrenal suppression.
Common:
Pain or burning at injection site
Muscle jerks (myoclonus)
Nausea or vomiting
Less common:
Temporary suppression of adrenal gland function
Changes in breathing pattern
Drop in cortisol levels
Rare allergic reactions
Administered intravenously (IV) only
Dose must be prepared and administered by anesthesiologist, emergency physician, or trained staff
Monitor:
Airway and breathing
Blood pressure
Heart rate
Oxygen saturation
Avoid mixing with other drugs in the same syringe unless specifically instructed.
