Clindamycin is an antibiotic used in hospitals and clinical settings to treat serious bacterial infections. It is commonly prescribed for:
Skin and soft-tissue infections
Bone and joint infections (osteomyelitis)
Intra-abdominal infections
Respiratory tract infections (pneumonia, lung abscess)
Gynecological infections (pelvic inflammatory disease)
Severe dental infections
Sepsis caused by susceptible bacteria
It is used when bacteria do not respond to other antibiotics or when patients cannot take penicillin.
600–1200 mg per day, divided every 8–12 hours
Given IV or IM
May require 1200–2700 mg/day, divided doses
In life-threatening infections, up to 4800 mg/day under close hospital monitoring
IM dose should not exceed 600 mg at a single site
IV doses are diluted and infused slowly
Dosage depends on severity, age, kidney/liver status, and clinical response.
Common:
Pain or irritation at injection site
Nausea or vomiting
Diarrhea
Rash or itching
Serious (requires urgent medical attention):
Severe diarrhea (possible C. difficile infection)
Liver function changes
Allergic reactions
Low blood pressure (rare)
Must be administered by a doctor or trained healthcare professional
Can be given:
IV infusion (over 10–60 minutes depending on dose)
Deep IM injection
Monitor patient for:
Allergic reactions
Liver and kidney function
Signs of severe diarrhea
Do not self-inject.
