Clindamycin is a lincosamide antibiotic used to treat moderate to severe bacterial infections. It is typically used in hospital or clinical settings for:
Skin and soft-tissue infections
Bone and joint infections (e.g., osteomyelitis)
Respiratory tract infections (pneumonia, lung abscess)
Intra-abdominal infections
Pelvic and gynecological infections
Septicemia (bloodstream infection)
Severe dental infections
Post-surgical infections
Used when bacteria are resistant to or the patient cannot tolerate penicillin.
Dosing depends on infection severity, patient age, and organ function.
600–1200 mg per day, divided every 8–12 hours
Dose may go up to 2400–2700 mg/day for severe infections
In life-threatening infections, doses may reach 4800 mg/day under strict monitoring
IV infusion (preferred for high doses)
Deep IM injection (single IM dose should not exceed 600 mg per site)
Common:
Pain, swelling, or irritation at injection site
Nausea or vomiting
Diarrhea
Mild rash
Serious:
Severe diarrhea (possible C. difficile infection)
Liver enzyme elevation
Allergic reactions
Low blood pressure (rare)
Seek medical help for severe abdominal pain, persistent diarrhea, or breathing difficulty.
Administered only by trained medical professionals
IV infusion is given slowly (over 10–60 minutes, depending on dose)
IM is injected deep into a muscle using sterile technique
Continuous patient monitoring is required for:
Allergic reactions
Liver function
Kidney function
Gastrointestinal symptoms
Do not self-administer.
