Metformin SR is an oral antidiabetic medicine commonly used for:
Helps lower blood sugar
Improves the body’s response to insulin
Decreases glucose production by the liver
Helps control long-term diabetes complications
Used to delay or prevent progression to Type 2 diabetes (doctor’s decision)
Helps improve insulin resistance
May help regulate menstrual cycles
Typical adult dosage guidelines:
500 mg SR once daily, with the evening meal
Gradually increased every 1–2 weeks
Total daily dose may range from 1000 mg to 2000 mg SR
SR (Sustained Release) tablets are taken once or twice daily, depending on the doctor’s recommendation.
Swallow whole—do not crush or chew.
Dose adjustment is needed in kidney-impaired patients.
Common:
Nausea
Stomach discomfort
Bloating or gas
Mild diarrhea (improves over time)
Less common:
Metallic taste
Loss of appetite
Serious but rare:
Lactic acidosis (requires immediate medical attention)
Vitamin B12 deficiency with long-term use
Seek medical care if severe abdominal pain, rapid breathing, or extreme fatigue occurs.
Take once daily with food, usually with the evening meal
Swallow tablet whole with water
Take consistently at the same time every day
Avoid alcohol excess
Continue regular monitoring:

Kidney function
