Lamivudine is an antiretroviral medicine used for:
Used as part of combination antiretroviral therapy (ART)
Helps reduce viral load
Improves immune function (increases CD4 count)
Slows disease progression
Helps reduce HBV replication
Supports liver protection and reduces disease complications
It is never used alone for HIV—always combined with other ART medicines.
Typical dosing guidelines:
150 mg twice daily OR
300 mg once daily (depending on combination therapy)
100 mg once daily is commonly used, but dose may vary.
Dose adjustments may be required in kidney impairment.
Must be taken consistently to maintain viral suppression.
Common:
Headache
Nausea
Fatigue
Nasal congestion or cough
Diarrhea
Less common but important:
Liver enzyme elevation
Lactic acidosis (rare but serious)
Pancreatitis (more common in children)
Seek medical attention if severe abdominal pain, breathing difficulty, or jaundice occurs.
Take with or without food.
Swallow tablet with water.
Take at the same time every day to maintain drug levels.
Do not skip doses—consistent use is essential for HIV or HBV control.
