Medical Uses

Lamivudine is an antiretroviral medicine used for:

• HIV-1 Infection

• Used as part of combination antiretroviral therapy (ART)

• Helps reduce viral load

• Improves immune function (increases CD4 count)

• Slows disease progression

• Chronic Hepatitis B (HBV)

• Helps reduce HBV replication

• Supports liver protection and reduces disease complications

It is never used alone for HIV—always combined with other ART medicines.

2. Dosage (Doctor Must Decide)

Typical dosing guidelines:

For HIV-1 (Adults)

• 150 mg twice daily OR

• 300 mg once daily (depending on combination therapy)

For Hepatitis B

• 100 mg once daily is commonly used, but dose may vary.

Notes:

• Dose adjustments may be required in kidney impairment.

• Must be taken consistently to maintain viral suppression.

3. Side Effects

Common:

• Headache

• Nausea

• Fatigue

• Nasal congestion or cough

• Diarrhea

Less common but important:

• Liver enzyme elevation

• Lactic acidosis (rare but serious)

• Pancreatitis (more common in children)

Seek medical attention if severe abdominal pain, breathing difficulty, or jaundice occurs.

4. How to Use

• Take with or without food.

• Swallow tablet with water.

• Take at the same time every day to maintain drug levels.

• Do not skip doses—consistent use is essential for HIV or HBV control.

• Regular monitoring:

  • Viral load

  • Liver function

  • Kidney function
