Hydroxyurea 500 mg capsules are used to treat several blood-related disorders and certain cancers. They are commonly prescribed in sickle cell disease to reduce the frequency of painful crises, need for blood transfusions, and risk of complications by increasing fetal hemoglobin levels. Hydroxyurea is also used in myeloproliferative disorders such as polycythemia vera and essential thrombocythemia to help control high blood cell counts, and in some cases for chronic myeloid leukemia. The medicine works by slowing the growth of abnormal blood cells and improving blood flow, which helps reduce disease-related symptoms and complications when taken under medical supervision.
