Doxycycline injection is a broad-spectrum antibiotic used when oral doxycycline cannot be given, or when a rapid effect is needed. It is used for:
Severe bacterial infections
Respiratory tract infections (pneumonia, atypical infections)
Skin and soft tissue infections
Severe acne-related infections
Intra-abdominal infections
Tick-borne infections such as:
Scrub typhus
Rocky Mountain spotted fever
Lyme disease
Sexually transmitted infections
Malaria (combination therapy)
Anthrax (including inhalational anthrax)
Typical adult dosing:
100 mg IV every 12 hours on Day 1
Then 100 mg IV once daily
For severe infections: 100 mg IV every 12 hours may be continued
IV infusion only
Not given as IM (intramuscular), as it causes severe tissue irritation
Reconstituted with sterile water
Further diluted and infused over 1–4 hours depending on dose
Dosage adjustments may be required for special conditions.
Common:
Nausea
Diarrhea
Injection site pain or inflammation
Skin sensitivity to sunlight
Less common:
Liver enzyme elevation
Low blood pressure during infusion (rare)
Tooth discoloration (avoid in children under 8 unless essential)
Serious (seek medical care):
Severe allergic reaction
Severe headache/visual changes (possible intracranial hypertension)
Persistent diarrhea (C. difficile risk)
Administered only by trained healthcare professionals
Given as slow IV infusion, never as IV push
Monitoring required for:
Allergic reactions
Blood pressure during infusion
Liver and kidney function
Gastrointestinal symptoms
Patients should avoid excessive sun exposure during treatment.
